On the evening of March 5, in a very well-attended hustings held at Sarum College, local Lib-Dem party members chose Nick Radford as their Prospective Parliamentary Candidate (PPC). There will be more on this here, and on Nick's own website, soon.

| NICK CLEGG IS NEW NATIONAL LEADER OF LIB-DEMS |
After a very close-run race, Nick Clegg just edged the contest to succeed Ming Campbell as Leader of the Lib-Dems nationally, beating Chris Huhne by a mere 511 votes.
We don't normally carry national news on this website, and you can find out much more about the leadership contest, Lib-Dem policies, etc on the Lib-Dem national website. However, local party members had an excellent opportunity to make up their minds between the two candidates, because both Chris Huhne and Nick Clegg had attended Lib-Dem fund-raising events in Salisbury as guest speakers in the 12 months preceding the election. Not only that, but we had also recently hosted our interim leader Vince Cable as well. See further down the page for more on these visits and about our "political lunch" programme!

| LIBDEM SUCCESS IN 2007 LOCAL ELECTIONS |
|
The May 3rd local election brought stunning successes for Salisbury LibDems, and loss of political control for the Tories. With an increase from nine to 19 seats, we more than doubled our representation on Salisbury District Council. Meanwhile the Tories lost eight, reducing them to 22 seats.
In the near future we hope to put information about all our new councillors on this website. But until then you can find brief biographical details in the election literature (pdf format), by clicking on the ward names below.

| CLLR IAN WEST SLAMS A303 FIASCO |
 |
|
[In early December 2007, it was announced that the Government had scrapped all aspects of the A303 Stonehenge Improvement Scheme. The proposed Winterbourne Stoke bypass, costed at between £20m and £30m, was one of the local road improvements that had been under consideration as part of the project.]
Wiltshire Lib-Dem county councillor and SDC councillor Ian West, who lives in Winterbourne Stoke, commented: "We weren't surprised when the Stonehenge tunnel scheme fell through. But we were stunned when there was no mention of our bypass. We thought there would be a separate bypass scheme for Winterbourne Stoke, because of the situation here. We've been campaigning for 40 years for a bypass and over that period the traffic on the road has greatly increased."
Councillor West said that life in Winterbourne Stoke was dominated by the A303. "It cuts the village in half. Just crossing the road or trying to drive from our homes on to the A303 is very difficult. We're prisoners in our own village."
On the 9th December Cllr West added "Today we have started a campaign by petitioning the Department of Transport and the Highway Agency for improvements to road safety within the village we have identified three issues which need addressing urgently top of the list is a pedestrian crossing followed by a reduction in the speed limit to 30mph and a speed camera on the eastbound carriageway through the village, I believe all these are achievable in the short term, our longer term aim is to campaign for a stand alone bypass from the Stonehenge issue we know that there is very strong support throughout the whole district for this to happen."

VINCE CABLE JOINS SALISBURY LIB-DEMS FOR XMAS DINNER
Around 90 members, supporters, and their guests gathered for their annual Christmas Dinner at Sarum College on the evening of 10th December to enjoy excellent food, a fundraising auction, a raffle and an after dinner speech by Dr. Vince Cable, interim leader of the party. He congratulated the local party on their successful election results in the May 2007 elections.
Ever modest, especially about his own surprise leadership of the party which he was enjoying, he went on to woo his audience with quiet confidence and humour as he discussed his own, and the party’s, important role in current parliamentary debate: he discussed his views on defence, tax, health, the Northern Rock Bank saga, the economy, education, racism and threats to civil liberties including lost data and ID cards. His concerns over the centralization of medical records drew unanimous approval from his audience.

NICK CLEGG VISITS SALISBURY LIB-DEMS
More than 70 members and supporters gathered for a Liberal Democrat Fundraising Supper on Friday 28th September in Hale Hall. Nick Clegg, Liberal Democrat MP for Sheffield Hallam and Home Affairs Spokesman, spoke about the role of an MP in parliament today.
His wide-ranging speech covered many aspects of his political work, but the audience were surprised and impressed to hear how much of his time was spent replying to his constituents’ letters and phone calls following his local MP surgery. He believed that he was giving a “voice to the voiceless” though this essential service.
He suggested that Liberal Democrats should aim to reconfigure the state so it was more in tune with, and closer to, the heartbeat of the people: there was a need to reconnect people to government.

LARRY HOLLINGWORTH GUEST SPEAKER AT SALISBURY LIB-DEM SUPPER

Salisbury Liberal Democrats were privileged to have Larry Hollingsworth, a former United Nations staff member as their after-dinner speaker on 17th February. An audience of eighty-plus were fascinated as he spoke of his work in Somalia, Bosnia, Pakistan, Chechnya, Lebanon and Darfur. Danger is ever present for those whose job it is to ensure that aid agencies are able to deliver aid to refugees and children in war zones and disaster areas across the world.

CHRIS HUHNE GUEST SPEAKER AT SALISBURY LIB-DEM CHRISTMAS DINNER
Our traditional Christmas Dinner was held at Old Sarum College on December 2nd, attended by some 90 members and guests. Featured guest of honour was Chris Huhne, MP for Eastleigh, shadow environment spokesman, and runner-up in the 2006 election for party leader (see photos at left and below). In a wide-ranging and amusing speech, Chris touched on many of the issues which are of concern both to our party and the public at large. For some of the main points that Chris made, click here.

| MORE COUNTY REPRESENTATION |
 |
LibDem representation for the Salisbury area on the County Council is significantly stronger nowadays. The 2005 County Council Election saw Liberal
Democrat successes in Salisbury East (John English), Salisbury
South (Bobbie Chettleborough and Brian Dalton), and Wilton
and Wylye (Ian West). And across Wiltshire, the Lib Dem vote
was 36.5%, securing us 16 County Council seats. |
