Rising house prices as well as a nationwide housing shortage have contributed to increasing numbers of homeless people. Some might be forgiven for thinking that homelessness is not an issue in Salisbury, but the reality is that there are over 100 people homeless in South Wiltshire. Finding yourself on the streets must be a harrowing experience. The scary thing is that it can happen to anyone. But ex-servicemen and women who struggle to cope with life outside of the forces are particularly vulnerable to homelessness, which has special relevance for Salisbury. read more Wed 24th Feb 2010: Salisbury’s shops show strength even in downturn. With the lowest rate of shop vacancies in the South West, new figures reveal that Salisbury’s high street shops are managing better than many other cities. Across the country small independent shops have had a tough time with the fall in consumer spending and competition from supermarkets. A new report from the Local Data Company shows 1 in 8 shops across the UK are now empty after the recession, a vacancy rate of 12%. IN TWO WEEKS time Nick Radford, Prospective Lib Dem MP for Salisbury, and his partner Eeva will race the gruelling 11-mile “Terminator” race to raise money for The Stars Appeal. ON THE SAME DAY that Liberal Democrats in Salisbury set out their General Election plans to put more police on the beat, the latest figures revealed that the number of police in Wiltshire has dropped by 25 officers since last March. Police numbers in Wiltshire decreased from 1229 in March 2009 to 1204 in September 2009. The situation is similar across the country where police numbers have fallen in 18 out of the 43 police forces (42%) in England and Wales since 2005. Two thirds of these police authorities are currently controlled by the Conservatives. read more Wed 3rd Feb 2010: "We must fight to keep local HPA jobs". EIGHT hundred jobs are under threat at the Health Protection Agency site at Porton Down. The shock reports have been met with anger from staff, local politicians and Unions.
