Salisbury Liberal Democrats have called on Salisbury District Council to invest in the
installation of two turbines at Fisherton Mill Weir to generate green energy. The Government
have set a target for local authorities to generate 10% of energy needs by renewable technology by 2010.
To date the District Council have not adopted any major initiative to meet the target.
The electricity generating by the hydro electric power project proposed by the local Liberal
Democrats would be sufficient to supply street lights throughout the city and sell
back energy to the National Grid.
Salisbury District Councillor Bobbie Chettleburgh said: "If the District can show the vision to
go ahead with this scheme, it would help to meet this important target. I'm always emphasising the need
for a sustainable approach at Council meetings."
Bulford District Councillor James Spencer agreed: "After the initial capital outlay involved in
purchase and installation of the turbines, the District Council will have generated another profitable
stream of revenue. Salisbury District Council can go on to instal other turbines on local rivers, after
this first venture into producing green energy locally. We will be moving a resolution at full Council
meeting to kick start our scheme in the near future."
