LIBDEM SUCCESS IN 2007 LOCAL ELECTIONS
New Councillors Cheryl Hill (left) and Helena McKeown with SDC LibDem
leader Councillor Paul Sample on election night

The May 3rd local election brought stunning successes for Salisbury LibDems, and loss of political control for the Tories. With an increase from nine to 19 seats, we more than doubled our representation on Salisbury District Council. Meanwhile the Tories lost eight, reducing them to 22 seats.

In the near future we hope to put information about all our new councillors on this website. But until then you can find brief biographical details in the election literature (pdf format), by clicking on the ward names below.

CONSERVATIVE JOINS LIBERAL DEMOCRATS

The Leader of the Liberal Democrats on Salisbury District Council, Cllr Paul Sample, has welcomed a new recruit to Salisbury Liberal Democrats from the Conservative Party!

Yeovil MP David Laws and Cllr Paul Sample helped Conservative Party member Peter Mitchell, from Bedford Road, Salisbury, to cut up his Salisbury Conservative Association membership card at Bourne Hill, Salisbury, on Thursday. Then local Party Chairman Greg Condliffe (2nd from right in photograph) welcomed the new recruit with his first Lib Dem membership card.

Yeovil MP David Laws visited the area to see a 18th Century “Secret Garden”, and 14 mature hardwood trees, which are being levelled by the Tories. He said: “I was delighted to accept an invitation by the local Liberal Democrat Councillors to visit the site of this project. “It is clear from what I’ve been told that the local residents are very angry about the way in which the Conservatives are wasting £15.4 million on this project. They seem to have acted very arrogantly.” A Sweet Chestnut tree, which looked exactly like the new Conservative Party logo, has already been cut down by the Council’s contractors.

Mr Mitchell, who was previously a Conservative Party member, said the main reason that he was joining the Liberal Democrats was because of Conservative arrogance in pushing the Council Office project through – despite a petition opposing the project signed by over 3,000 people.

NICK CLEGG VISITS SALISBURY LIB-DEMS

More than 70 members and supporters gathered for a Liberal Democrat Fundraising Supper on Friday 28th September in Hale Hall. Nick Clegg, Liberal Democrat MP for Sheffield Hallam and Home Affairs Spokesman, spoke about the role of an MP in parliament today. His wide-ranging speech covered many aspects of his political work, but the audience were surprised and impressed to hear how much of his time was spent replying to his constituents’ letters and phone calls following his local MP surgery. He believed that he was giving a “voice to the voiceless” though this essential service.

He suggested that Liberal Democrats should aim to reconfigure the state so it was more in tune with, and closer to, the heartbeat of the people: there was a need to reconnect people to government. For more about Nick's speech, click here.

LARRY HOLLINGWORTH GUEST SPEAKER AT SALISBURY LIB-DEM SUPPER

Salisbury Liberal Democrats were privileged to have Larry Hollingsworth, a former United Nations staff member as their after-dinner speaker on 17th February. An audience of eighty-plus were fascinated as he spoke of his work in Somalia, Bosnia, Pakistan, Chechnya, Lebanon and Darfur. Danger is ever present for those whose job it is to ensure that aid agencies are able to deliver aid to refugees and children in war zones and disaster areas across the world. For more, click here.

CHRIS HUHNE GUEST SPEAKER AT SALISBURY LIB-DEM CHRISTMAS DINNER

Our traditional Christmas Dinner was held at Old Sarum College on December 2nd, attended by some 90 members and guests. Featured guest of honour was Chris Huhne, MP for Eastleigh, shadow environment spokesman, and runner-up in the 2006 election for party leader (see photos at left and below). In a wide-ranging and amusing speech, Chris touched on many of the issues which are of concern both to our party and the public at large. For some of the main points that Chris made, click here.

Salisbury LibDems have initiated a programme of lunches and dinners with key LibDem politicians, which have been greatly enjoyed both by the party members who attended and by the invited guest speakers. Sandra Gidley (Romsey MP), Lord Razzall, Graham Watson (our MEP), and Chris Huhne (Eastleigh MP, see also earlier story above) all took part in the 2006 programme, with others including Nick Clegg and Vince Cable following in 2007.

YOUTH REPRESENTATIVE APPOINTED

The Salisbury LibDems Executive Committee were delighted to welcome Henry Curr as committee member with responsibility for youth and students. Henry is co-ordinating a drive to recruit more young LibDem members, and points out that LibDem policies have a lot to offer young people today. For more information, click here.

"MEET THE (LibDem) NEIGHBOURS" SOCIAL EVENING

What are that excellent local Folk-Rock band Mary Jane doing here? They provided the entertainment at a very successful Social Evening held in Whiteparish recently, for members of the Salisbury and Romsey LibDem parties and their guests. For more info, and some photos, click here.

MORE COUNTY REPRESENTATION

LibDem representation for the Salisbury area on the County Council is significantly stronger nowadays. The 2005 County Council Election saw Liberal Democrat successes in Salisbury East (John English), Salisbury South (Bobbie Chettleborough and Brian Dalton), and Wilton and Wylye (Ian West). And across Wiltshire, the Lib Dem vote was 36.5%, securing us 16 County Council seats.
