Salisbury Liberal Democrats urge the City Council not to ‘cancel Christmas’.

Plans for a small Covid-secure Christmas fayre have been quashed by Conservative City Councillors who refused to contribute to the cost of running a family friendly event for our community.

With no pantomime, ice rink, or switching on of the Christmas lights this year, we urge Salisbury City Council to reconsider this event and not cancel Christmas for Salisbury.

Salisbury Liberal Democrats urge the City Council not to ‘cancel Christmas’.

At a meeting of the City Council on 7th September, a motion by Conservative Councillor for St. Francis & Stratford, Atiqul Hoque, stopped the Council from contributing to the cost of a small Christmas event which would have boosted the mood, and footfall, in Salisbury.

The planned Covid-secure event, with six food vendors, a bar, and a family entertainment programme, was to be much smaller than previous years but a welcome addition to the market square during this difficult year. The City Council designed an event that, if further restrictions were imposed, could be closed to the public without delay and predominantly dismantled within 48 hours, without incurring costs beyond that point.

Salisbury Liberal Democrats are calling upon the council to reverse this decision and not to cancel Christmas.

Parliamentary spokesperson, Victoria Charleston said:

“We have all heard the story of the Grinch but here it is being played out in front of us.  With the Government’s announcement that Lockdown will continue for another six months, families and businesses in Salisbury could have all done with this boost.”

Cllr Brian Dalton said:

“I am keen to get this overturned to ensure we save Christmas for Salisbury and help to keep residents spending money locally”.

Salisbury Liberal Democrats have a petition open which will be presented to the City Council.
